About Cape Verde

Cape Verde is a magical country where cultures mix, golden sandy beaches are framed by oases of lush paradise and glorious dormant volcanoes overlook a lifestyle of simple charms and flamboyant celebration. In short, for those who seek an escape from the chaotic pace of modern living, Cape Verde is nothing short of a blissful, heavenly retreat.

Anyone who has visited Cape Verde before will know exactly what is meant by the colloquial word ‘Morabeza’. It means the warm welcome of the locals, who are as quick to offer you a place at their table as they are to give you one of their astonishing smiles; it represents the rich indigenous culture which shapes the lives of everyone on the islands; and it stands for the multitude of charms that prosper in the vivid sun-kissed geography, delicious local cuisine and gracious people of Cape Verde.

The Magic of Cape Verde

Today, in addition to the 10 islands and 8 islets – each of which has its own distinct atmosphere and attractions – Cape Verde is split into 22 counties. The island of Santa Luzia is uninhabited and, in fact, a nature reserve; although each of the islands is of outstanding, natural beauty and many endangered species are endemic to the country.

While agriculture and fishing account for just 10% of Cape Verde’s GDP, visitors can still pick up a smorgasbord of locally-produced fruits, vegetables, coffee, beans, corn and fish – all of which contribute to traditional delicacies.

The official language of Cape Verde is Portuguese, but you’ll hear Cape Verdean Creole, or Kriolu, spoken more often. Based on Portuguese Creole, this language differs slightly from island to island; there is currently a movement to standardise and officialise Kriolu as a language. Likewise, Cape Verde boasts a truly unique culture in which African and Portuguese influences are fused. ‘Morna’ folk music is perhaps the country’s most famous export, while dances such as ‘Passada’, ‘Funaná’ and ‘Coladeira’ are wonderful to watch.

It’s a heady cocktail that soon has all visitors drunk on the enchantments of culture, cuisine, relaxation and luxurious living. And one that leaves them always wanting more.
